Christian Community Chapel, Canterbury
Peter and David worked together on this project while at a previous practice. The chapel was built in 2011 using timber framing techniques including an innovative self-supporting domed roof made from 200mm thick Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) with no supporting structural frame over the main chapel space.
It was constructed as an extension to the existing building, using a raft founded over sensitive archaeological artefacts some 500mm below ground level.
The panels were developed with Cowley Timberwork and a connection detail was developed which eliminated cold bridging from the joints. The scheme was commended at the IStructE’s Structural Awards.
