Gorton Monastery

The ‘Welcome wing’ at Gorton Monastery is a new HLF-funded building directly adjacent to the grade 2* listed existing construction, and includes provision for gallery, exhibition and lecture space together with hospitality and studio accommodation.

The new structure comprises a glulam framed wing incorporating north lights for natural daylighting and a 3-storey steel framed wing accommodating the administrative facilities. The structural design and detailing was sensitive to the adjacent listed structural fabric and incorporated cantilevered foundations so as not to undermine existing footings, and the envelope of the new extension was detailed with levels of insulation and airtightness approaching PassivHaus standards.
