Race Horses, Cheltenham

Corbett and Tasker are the engineers for this life sized sculpture of two race horses mid stride over a bar in Cheltenham. The polystyrene horse forms are reinforced internally with a lightweight steel frame which cantilevers up from a precambered steel ‘tram track’ suspended over the central circular bar which also needed reinforcing.

Our analysis included consideration of peak stresses where the ‘hooves’ connected to the tram track at the base of the cantilevers, peak deflections within the horses’ bodies and dynamic effects. The steel legs are fabricated from steel tubular sections, reinforced with solid rods, and the steel frame as a whole is designed to carefully co-ordinate with the form of the horses.
