The Space, Enfield
The Space is a new purpose-built community building for St John’s Methodist Church in Enfield, north London. The brief required a set of flexible, interconnecting spaces that could be used for a variety of community activities and events, including a pre-school and co-working spaces alongside the spaces for prayer and worship.
One of the key objectives was the use of timber to create a warm and welcoming space and to reduce the carbon footprint of the building, as part of a reduced energy consumption strategy, both in its construction and in its ongoing use. A timber structure, utilising Cross Laminated and Glulaminated Timber elements, is visually expressed internally to create this welcoming feel. The exposed timber structure required careful design to meet the fire requirements whilst creating elegant connection details.
